Georgia DUI Attorney John Breakfield has taken the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) classes on Standard Field Sobriety Tests Practitioner and the Advanced Road Side Impaired Driving Enforcement (ARIDE). Most officers have taken the same practitioner course. Many officers have not taken the time to take the ARIDE course.
Law enforcement officers are trained to arrest drivers under the standards set out in the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration Standard Field Sobriety Tests. Police should be trained on how to properly evaluate a driver by using Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN), the Walk & Turn, and the One Leg Stand.
Like any test or training, not everyone paid attention in class and not everyone learned to do it right. Also, in real life, officers can forget proper training, not take appropriate care and, overtime, get into bad habits that can create improper arrests.
